4 Free Socially Distanced Things To Do in NYC
While I’m sure that this list could definitely be longer, I am going to go off of my personal experience and recent visit to the city. Largely, NYC’s attractions are free and outdoors. While it may be intimidating to visit one of the most populated cities during a pandemic, I was surprised to feel pretty safe. Here are four socially distanced things to do in NYC:
1. Dumbo Brooklyn
One of Brooklyn’s most popular neighborhoods is DUMBO. Probably at least one influencer you follow has a picture on their Instagram of the steely-blue Manhattan Bridge in the background. This neighborhood is located right by a couple of waterfront parks that offer a great view of the city. You can locate the widely photographed street at the intersection of Washington Street and Water Street. At the end of Washington street, you can find Main Street Park. This park can get a bit noisy as the metro frequently passes on the Manhatten Bridge. Further down to the left is another scenic waterfront park called the Empire Fulton Ferry Park .
DUMBO is also located right next to the Brooklyn Bridge! We ended up walking the length of the bridge to explore more of the inner city. One of my favorite parts about the bridge is that you can catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty while on it.
2. The High Line
The high line is a unique urban park in NY. A cool fact about it is that it was built on a historic elevated rail line. The park features a nice arrangement of plants, gardens, modern design, art, and occasional performances.
3. THE VESSEL
At the very end of the High Line, you will be in Hudson Yards where you will see this massive futuristic hive-like structure called the Vessel. There are stairs leading to the top that gives you a nice view of the Hudson Yards neighborhood. Tickets may be limited for entry but can be easily be booked on your phone last minute depending on how busy it is.
4. CENTRAL PARK
While I know that this may be an obvious spot, Central Park is HUGE. There is so much to explore in the park that is impossible to see it all in one day. We ended up visiting the “secret garden” area of central park. It’s called the Conservatory Garden. There is a nice vine-covered walkway and a variety of vibrantly colored flowers.
We also visited one of the open fields called The Great Lawn. There were lots of people out having picnics, playing frisbee, and hanging out with friends. It also provided a great view of the inner city skyline.
