Getting Laid Off In The Middle Of My Road Trip

Hey everyone! I wanted to be completely honest about my situation. Although I’ve been sharing my exciting adventures from my solo road trip, I did end up having to cut my journey short because I was laid off. However, my journey doesn’t end quite there. I have BIG plans for my next steps.

When I first started my trip, I was so excited that I was able to convince my employer to let me work remotely so that I could travel. I was working as a project director for a small media agency and oversaw all the creative work and was largely the main contact between the company and the clients. I loved working remotely and exploring on my time off. When I was in DC, my boss had even discussed a salaried promotion with me that I was going to start. I was still carrying on the responsibilities of Project Director until my boss had the time to train me for my new position. Here I was, thinking that life is working perfectly for me and I can continue my travels. That was the case for a short while until I was in Boston…

It was a Friday afternoon and I was sitting by the Harvard courtyard when my boss wanted to have a Zoom meeting. It was then that he told me that he had to make a difficult decision to lay me off. He clarified that his reasoning wasn’t due to my performance but for the best financial interests of the company. I was so shocked because I had just received a promotion and also betrayed especially when he knew I was in the middle of a road trip. I knew this meant that my trip would have to be cut short. Instead of crying and getting depressed, I continued with my travels to Boston, New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, New York, and back to the DMV. During that period, I made sure to appreciate the time off and be happy in the present moment. My original plan was to stay with my friend Alex for a month and apply to the DMV area. Although I did apply, it didn’t really excite me. With much thought and asking myself what I truly wanted, I decided that I couldn’t work under someone again. My passion was travel and I knew that I was good at marketing, management, and communicating with clients. I asked myself, “How can I take what I love and my skills to live the life I want?”. I’ll start my own business of course!

So here I am, back in my Florida suburb trying to start my own marketing company so that I can be location independent. This means that I am not tied to any particular location and I can have the flexibility to work from anywhere. I’ve been working really hard every day so that I can get this business launched by early 2021. I have my LLC and I am truly excited and passionate about this new venture. Your 20’s are your time in life where you can afford to take risks, make mistakes, and live out your dreams. I have been into manifestation lately, and I am putting my dreams out there so that they can be fulfilled. I am using positive affirmations to motivate myself. The goal is to run my company from abroad by mid to late 2021. I have no idea what I’m doing and have no idea how this is all going to work out, but I am going to kick ass, grind, and believe in myself.
