Seeing Cherry Blossoms For The First Time In DC

Springtime is arguably the best season of the year – when you don’t live in Florida. Upon arriving in DC, the trees were budding and it was only a matter of time before the iconic cherry blossoms would bring forth gorgeous hues of pink and white throughout the DMV area. Other than the monuments that DC is most known for, it would also have to be the cherry blossoms! Since the pandemic was still taken very seriously, there wasn’t the typical Cherry Blossom Festival event going on. I believe I saw some flyers for a couple of performances, but nothing major this year as an event so well known is known to draw a huge crowd. Nevertheless, the blossoms were gorgeous and the weather – cold!

The best place to see the cherry Blossoms

The most recognized location for seeing the cherry blossoms would have to be Tidal Basin. Tidal Basin is located right next to the National Mall. It features a little lake that is completely surrounded by cherry blossoms with the view of the monuments in the background. It definitely makes for the most perfect pictures when there aren’t a ton of people around!

When to See the Cherry Blossoms

There is no exact time to know when the blossoms will be in bloom, but generally early to mid-April is when you may have the best chance of seeing them. Keep in mind that the bloom period is only for 2 weeks!

When I went to see the cherry blossoms at Tidal Basin, the weather was super cold the day that I went (40’s F), but the week prior was actually really pleasant weather and the trees were in bloom as well. Also, the trees were mainly white in appearance in which they probably hadn’t reached peak bloom. The experience was still really great and beautiful. If you ever find yourself in the DC area in the Spring, the Cherry Blossoms are a must-do.
